PRO

Background

The goal of PRO zine is to raise awareness and increase empathy through storytelling around a complex social issue that is constantly changing in this country.

Since 1973, Roe v. Wade has protected a woman’s reproductive rights in America. In 2019, when I curated and designed this zine, there was almost daily news of potential changes as states were passing bans and restrictions that will become law if Roe v. Wade is successfully challenged.

It was important for me to approach this project in a way that inspires education and participation around the subject, while also encouraging empathy for those individuals directly impacted by it.

Update

On June 24, 2022, the Supreme Court of the United States issued a 6-3 ruling that overturned Roe v. Wade. Trigger laws banning abortion in certain states went into effect with more states to follow.

The project captured a moment in time when many feared and anticipated this reversal of a 50 year precedent by a conservative majority.

Strategy

The zine format is informed by early American women’s and civil rights movements that used DIY zines and newspapers to spread their messages and rally activists.

Each issue contains current information about the laws and restrictions in different states.

PRO includes the stories of individuals who have been affected by limited access to garner understanding and empathy.

The visual language is inspired by the tearing away of this decision for women, creating confusion and difficult emotions.

March for Reproductive Rights

An accompanying protest march identity builds on the collective activism of women’s rights movements throughout history. This transforms the emotions and information from the zine into an actionable conduit for change.
