Hockey Hall of Fame

Background

As a diehard hockey fan, I love a game winning goal, a miraculous save, and the energy of the athletes. I also acknowledge that hockey is not the most diverse or inclusive sport. Hockey culture is in need of a bold response from its institutions, recognizing the racism, sexism, and homophobia that permeates from youth to professional hockey.

Through this project, I imagined a new mission for this cultural institution. The Hockey Hall of Fame celebrates the proud history of a collective tradition, maintains the gritty spirit of its athletes, takes a resolute approach to creating change within the culture, and provides an electrifying experience for fans.

I also designed a hypothetical exhibit called Shattering Ice that addresses diversity and inclusion in the sport of hockey.

Identity System

The ice rink is an immediate signifier of hockey. The dissection and abstraction of these elements carry the sport’s vernacular into other visual applications.

Patinoire is a modular typeface that was developed from the structure and markings of an ice hockey rink.

Process & Strategy

The unique movement, materials, and structure of the game informed the process and identity system. I photographed typography through frozen sheets of ice as an analog way to convey transparency and authenticity.

Spatial Design

The Hockey Hall of Fame has a unique and storied facade. The colors and player images bring energy and excitement to this landmark.

Union Station in Toronto is an iconic transportation hub and special event center. It is the ideal showcase for the history of hockey and also helps to navigate visitors to the Hall of Fame by train.

Editorial Print

Members of the Hall of Fame will receive a calendar booklet that highlights the events throughout the year. The themes, speakers, and exhibits correspond with hockey history moments from each month.

Beyond professional hockey, the hall can engage with other segments of the culture. Beer League Magazine focuses on those who are shaping the sport in their local communities.

Shattering Ice

Background

Shattering Ice is a hypothetical year long exhibit at the Hockey Hall of Fame that confronts the problems facing the sport, intentionally responds and grows the game, and celebrates those figures throughout hockey history who have shattered barriers.

Fan Engagement

Shattering Ice highlights those former and current athletes who are changing the game through social media, ticketed events, and the interactive exhibit walls.
